Things to be Thankful For…Hair or No Hair

Hair removal is such a pain that it’s probably the last thing to be thankful about but in honor of Thanksgiving in the U.S. tomorrow I thought I would just say a few words about what we can be thankful for when it comes to removing hair….

Things to be thankful for about hair removal

Things to be thankful for about hair removal

  • we can be thankful about anywhere that hair is NOT growing (unless it’s not growing on your head!). That would be the palms of my hands and soles of my feet then – no need for wax or laser in those places :)
  • we can be thankful that there are reasonably accessible and affordable methods of dealing with any hair removal problem. No matter how much of a pest it is to get rid of hair, we don’t have to live with it unless we want to.
  • we can be thankful that no matter how hairy you are or which places you have hair sprouting from you are still lovable just as you are. People love people with hair growing everywhere and anywhere.

Have a Happy Hairy or Non-Hairy Thanksgiving tomorrow if you celebrate it and a great Thursday if you don’t.

Hair Removal Through the Winter

Lots of women don’t worry too much about hair removal through the winter, figuring that everything is nicely hidden under layers and layers of clothing.

But actually it’s quite nice to keep removing hair if you can be bothered

You’ll reap the benefits by feeling good about your body at all times. You’ll never have to worry about stripping off to try on clothes in a communal changing room. Or looking like the only gorilla at your aqua-aerobics class. And you’ll be ready for a hot date should hot dates be on the horizon.

Continue your beauty routines through the winter

And one added benefit is that if your chosen method of hair removal is often gradually weakening and thinning your excess hair. This is the case with those methods which pull the hair out from the roots – notably waxing, threading and using epilators. Your skin will get desensitized to the process of pulling out the hair too and you’ll find you get less redness, fewer red bumps and fewer ingrown hairs over time.

By continuing to remove hair throughout the winter, when your limbs are covered, even with a once a month process, you will find it much easier to remove your unwanted hair in the summer when you want to go bare in a hurry.

Hair Removal : You’re Not Alone

It seems that as many as 80% of women and 50% of men have to cope with unwanted hair in some shape or form.

Although women have removed unwanted hair for decades while men just shaved their faces, it is a relatively new but growing phenomenon for men to remove body hair.

Today, salons report that between 35% and 60% of their clientele are male.

But does removing hair make any difference to how attractive you are?

Well it certainly seems that way for women. Experiments have shown that women with body hair are viewed by both males and females as less intelligent, less sociable and less happy.

Images in magazines have a lot to answer for

Images in magazines have a lot to answer for

For men, the jury is still out – except where hairs between eyebrows (the “unibrow”) and on shoulders and backs are concerned plus those pesky hairs sprouting from nose and ears. Any more is probably unnecessary but hair is often removed to show off good musculature (body builders have a task and a half here) and for sexual reasons.

The bottom line is that, no matter what anyone else thinks or believes (and different cultures view body hair in different lights anyway), the need for hair removal is purely personal.

If removing hair makes you feel better than not removing it then you’ll go through the hassle of waxing, shaving, depilatory or laser hair treatment. And the more you dislike that excess hair and the more attractive you feel without it the more hassle you’ll be prepared put up with!

One thing is certain the more images we see of beautiful people in magazines and on TV the more we compare ourselves unfavorably with them and want to do whatever it takes to achieve a similar super sleek smooth body. Of course, we don’t always have the money or dedication it takes to succeed but more and more of us are trying, visiting spas and salons and spending more and more on hair removal.

So if you’re trying to get rid of hair, you’re in good company.

Chest Hair Removal

It has become fashionable these days for men to remove chest hair – every male model, film or sports star seems to show off a six pack and a smooth hair-free chest.

But if you want to get into chest hair removal how exactly should you go about it? The thing is there are more male chest hair removal methods and products than you can shake a stick at and any one of them might suit you depending on your budget and pain threshold!

Waxing Your Chest

This is a fast and relatively inexpensive method for removing hair from a large area of your body and therefore is pretty good for chests. The process involves smearing (usually hot) wax onto your chest, applying a strip of cloth to the wax then pulling off the strip once the wax has hardened around the hair (after a few seconds). Chest waxing can be pretty painful however and leave you with a glowing red chest (until it calms down – usually a few hours later). Regrowth is slow and it may be that you can go 4 to 6 weeks between treatments to maintain a smooth look. It’s best to go for a professional waxing treatment the first time you do this to get an idea of the process and to see if it suits you. After that you may want to think about purchasing a waxing kit which will save money and allow you to deal with your chest hair at home. Just make sure you have the courage to peel off those strips!

Laser Chest Hair Removal

If you have the budget (a few hundred dollars per session) having laser hair removal treatment is a great way of permanently reducing the hair on your chest. It is a quick process, less painful than waxing although you will still feel some discomfort (like being pinged by little elastic bands). You will need about six laser treatment sessions however to get rid of your chest hair and may need top ups to deal with any regrowth after the course of sessions is complete. Do remember that fashions change however. The current fashion is for smooth chests. When (and if) hairy chests are in again you will no longer have that option. If this worries you, use a temporary hair removal method such as waxing instead.

Shaving Chest Hair

This is the least expensive chest hair removal method although you will have to shell out for a quality razor to do the job well and take time and care in avoiding nicks and cuts. The disadvantages you will most likely know from shaving your face. Your skin can end up irritated by the shaving process itself – although not half so irritated and itchy as you will feel when the stubble grows back!

Chest Hair Trimming

As an alternative to complete chest hair removal, you could trim your chest hair to give a cleaner more defined look to your chest. Trimming chest hair by hand can be laborious if you have a lot but you can easily do this with a tool such as the Norelco BodyGrooming System which is designed to do the job perfectly and give you an even well groomed look using one of three attachment combs.

If you are planning to shave your chest then trim the hair first before shaving to make shaving easier and cut down irritation. You will find it easier to trim dry hair (before your shower) and the to shave afterwards.

Removing Chest Hair with Depilatory Cream

There are creams and lotions which are specially designed to remove male body hair. You apply the product over your skin, leave it for a few minutes and then remove it along with the hair. Result – smooth chest but only for a few days as hair grows back quite quickly. However you will not find the regrowth so troublesome as with shaving. If you would like to give this pain-free method a try take a look at products such as Veet or Nair hair removal cream for men. Just be sure to read the instructions and do a skin test before proceeding to use the product for a whole chest hair removal session!

Another Use for Depilatory Cream…

You can use depilatory cream just about everywhere on your body, provided that you are not sensitive to the chemicals and use the right hair removal cream in the right place, but I heard a new use for the stuff today which made me think that the world has gone a bit mad.

If you had a dog would you be beautifying it by using mascara and lipstick and removing hair which didn’t conform to the exact idea of dog beauty for your particular breed with Veet or Nair hair removal cream? I didn’t think so but apparently some owners are barking (!) mad enough to do so with the result that the top dog show in the UK has had to put out a warning that depilatory cream may not be used on dogs.

See this article from the Daily Telegraph.

Chinese Crested dog

Chinese Crested dog - one of the hairless breeds but only with help?

It’s the hairless breeds which may have a problem as they may have hair growing in the wrong places just like us.

What gets me is how they stop the dog removing the product before the time is up. I have a hard enough job, getting impatient standing around in the bathroom for what seems like an age (even though it is only a few minutes) while a depilatory lotion gets to work never mind a poor animal.

Now I know we suffer in the name of beauty and we can go to extremes burning off our unwanted hair with chemicals, and pulling it out by the roots with wax, but this is no way to treat our pets even if we don’t mind suffering ourselves in the name of beauty.

The beauty world got going on our men folk not too many years ago with Veet for men. Surely there will never be a Veet for dogs!
