Avoid Upper Lip Shaving

13 November, 2006 (14:23) | Hair Removal Views | By: Veronique

Upper lip hair is not much fun if you are a girl who likes to look good. I came across a forum post the other day where a woman had been shaving her upper lip since the age of 11 and now has a real 5 o’ clock shadow problem every day.

Do not do this, girls!

If you have a mustache problem you want rid of, it’s time to scrimp and save and get together the money and get yourself to the electrologist. No new dress or hair style will improve your look so much!

Electrolysis is slow but from the first treatment (which will remove all the hair, some temporarily and some permanently) you will feel better at taking action and in 6 months to a year you will no longer have a problem. Unsightly facial hair problems no more!

I know – I did this over 25 years ago and never looked back….and I expect treatment si much improved these days.

I know there are machines like the One Touch where you can perform electrolysis on yourself. They are an option if funds are very limited but if it’s just a small area on your face I would be tempted to go for professional electrolysis treatment every time. If you end up going for a ONE Touch please practice on an easier part of your body before you set to work on your face! See our review of the One Touch permanent hair remover for more details..

Flocking back to Electrolysis

Interesting thread on the Hair Tell Forum which starts out by providing a link to an article about hair removal and then moves onto a discussion about the media portrayal of laser hair removal as being so much better than electrolysis even though electrolysis is the only method of hair removal to really work permanently.

Permanent Hair Removal at Home

7 July, 2009 (05:48) | permanent hair removal | By: Veronique

How feasible is permanent hair removal at home?

Well, it is becoming a lot easier than it used to be even a few years ago.

Of course, we would all love to remove hair and have it disappear for good with one little treatment – an application of depilatory cream or a quick waxing session – but that isn’t going to happen anytime soon. There are really only two methods of permanent hair removal and each of them requires more than one session to get rid of hair for good – but they are worth it in the end.

To remove hair permanently you can use either electrolysis or laser hair removal. It used to be that each of these had to be performed in a registered salon by trained operators but now there is hair removal equipment which you can buy and use at home which has been approved by the FDA for each of these procedures.

Having looked at all the equipment out there, two home hair removal systems seem to have the edge over the others in terms of being effective and easy to use.

Laser Hair Removal

Silkn Hair Removal System

The Silkn hair removal machine is a system which has been clinically proven for long term hair removal by physicians and has been approved by the FDA for safe use in the home. It is costly to buy the machine but it will save you money compared to professional laser treatment or even waxing or shaving over the long term and of course you get all the convenience of removing hair in the privacy of your own home. Click here for buyer reviews and details of the latest substantial discounts on this system.

Electrolysis

one touch hair removal system

The One Touch electrolysis hair removal system is a portable system that works if you have a bit of patience and use care in operation. Start off at a low setting until you get used to the product and remain at a moderate setting throughout for best results. It has a very low cost compared to the Silkn and you will find that your costs are covered by even one or two electrolysis treatments at a salon. You can use it to treat hair almost anywhere on your body and face. To see what buyers have to say and the latest prices click here.

Of the two the One Touch takes more skill to operate but after practicing on your arms or legs you could use it with great care on your face. It takes longer to treat each section of hair than the Silkn system but it is likely to result in permanent hair removal faster than a laser hair removal system if you have the patience to work on each hair one at a time.

The Silk’n laser hair removal system comes into its own if you want to treat large areas of your body such as chest, arms or legs as you can treat a lot of hair in a short amount of time.

I have to warn you that some people are disappointed when they try these hair removal machines . I think it’s a case of false expectations as they do work effectively – but they take time to work. If you want to achieve permanent hair removal remember that it will take a bit of time to build up your skill levels in using theses machines and that you have to treat each hair at the right stage in its growth phase before the hair follicle is permanently destroyed so it may take a few sessions to destroy each hair.

If you are motivated however and take the time to use the equipment properly you will achieve permanent hair removal at home and that is a fantastic move forward for many with unwanted hair problems.

Home Hair Removal

8 July, 2009 (09:52) | Hair Removal | By: Veronique

Removing hair at home is great if you know what you are doing and there are quite a few methods of home hair removal to explore. With a whole body to care for you, will probably find yourself using quite a few of these methods to suit not just particular parts of the body but also particular times of the year (different methods for summer and winter) and different stages in your life (you may need a different method of hair removal when you suddenly get ultra busy with a new job or a new baby).

Also your budget will have a big impact on the methods you can choose. Some methods are a buy it once and then you’re set for a good long time while others you need to continue to buy strips and creams and refills. In any case you will removing hair at home cheaper than comparable methods at a salon.

Shaving This method is usually used for underarms and legs and is quick, easy and cheap but you will get a problem with stubbly regrowth which will mean dealing with your unwanted hair almost daily.
Waxing This is a great way to remove unwanted hair for weeks at a time. With a home hot wax kit you will get almost professional salon results if you are prepared to practice a bit until you get it right. If you want something quick you can get cold wax strips which come with a paper backing. You cut a strip the right size then just peel and stick. As you remove wax strips (whether hot or cold wax is used) it feels like pulling off a sticking plaster so you need the courage to do it quickly!
Epilators These little machines are the unsung heroes of the home hair removal world. I would not be parted from mine. They look like an electric shaver and you move the machine in the same way over your skin but a moving tweezer like action or rotary disks pull the hair out from the roots. Painful? a bit though modern machines have inbuilt pain relief mechanisms and you become accustomed to it over time. The action has a lasting effect like waxing leaving you looking smooth for a few weeks at a time. I have also found a reduction in hair growth over several years.
Depilatory Creams Depilatory creams are a bit messy and despite attempts at disguise still a bit smelly because of the hair dissolving chemicals used. But they are effective at leaving your skin smooth and hair free with no nicks or razor bumps and the smoothness lasts a little longer than shaving as the hair is dissolved a little way below the surface.
Laser Hair Removal Until recently a no-no for dealing with hair yourself but now finally possible due to home laser hair removal machines. Still only for those with deep pockets but worth thinking about.
Electrolysis Another method where you probably get better and quicker results from a professional but a home hair removal machine like a One Touch does make it possible to treat yourself provided you are in the right frame of mind to build in skill and spend the time. These machines are actually low cost but you do have to be careful and go easy so that you don’t damage your skin.

You may need to persevere a bit to find the methods of home hair removal that are right for you. I have certainly tried most things in my time. You might try using one method for under your arms, one for legs and another for your face. If you’re a guy, home hair removal might mean leaving your legs well alone but waxing your chest and getting a friend to help with your back. And then if the first way is not for you try something else. Getting a satisfactory method of home hair removal is all about experimentation.

Permanent Hair Removal Products

15 July, 2009 (09:05) | Hair Removal, permanent hair removal | By: Veronique

Permanent hair removal products – that’s the holy grail of hair removal – to have a product which removes hair permanently, particularly one which you can buy, use discretely at home and be assured that your hair removal problems are over for good.

But do such products exist?

Well, among the many scams and fake ads there are a few products on the market which really do work to get rid of your unwanted hair. They work, but they are not for everyone.

Why is that?

Each of the products requires careful operation and attention to detail so that you get the best possible results from the device. If you are slapdash with them, lose patience and don’t follow instructions you won’t get good results and you may damage your skin.

Here are a couple of the better examples of such products.

The Silk’n Laser Device

The Silk’n hair removal machine is a laser hair removal product for use in the home. You can treat your hairs quite quickly provided your hair and skin coloring are suitable for the machine and you are looking to treat body hair rather than hair on your face and neck. It isn’t cheap but it provides more affordable laser hair treatment than you will find at beauty clinics and medical spas. While the ideal is that you always go to professionals for laser hair removal, if you can’t afford that this machine provides you a cost effective alternative. See Silkn laser hair removal machine reviews for more details.

The One Touch Machine

The One Touch hair removal device is a product which works on the principle of electrolysis. It is much cheaper than the Silk’n and can be used on the face as well as the body (once you are experienced in using it).  You have to be more precise with this mahine and it is slower to treat your excess hair as you have to treat one hair at a time rather than “zapping” a few at once. See our review at One Touch permanent hair remover for more details about this.

You will only be pleased with your purchase of these products if you have the determination to deal for once and for all with your unwanted hair and you are prepared to put in the time to learn to operate the machines effectively and get the most out of them. Remember, even with professional treatment, you won’t get instant permanent removal of your hair. You have to go back for a number of sessions. Sometimes many. At least with these permanent hair removal products you can treat your unwanted hair as often as you like from the comfort of your own home without incurring   huge additional costs of repeat salon visits.

Back Hair Removal

16 July, 2009 (07:50) | Hair Removal | By: Veronique

It used to be OK for men to have hairy backs but these days the clean, groomed look is in and back hair removal is pretty much the norm for men who care about their appearance.

But it is not that easy to even see your back never mind remove the hair from it without assistance. So how do those in the know about male hair removal achieve (and maintain) a smooth back?

Well, you have a number of options to remove hair from your back and you may have to experiment a little to find the method that works best for you, depending on your budget, how your skin reacts and whether or not you have anyone to help you.

Back Hair Removal by Shaving

Shaving is the way that men naturally turn to when thinking about unwanted hair because you have probably been shaving your face for a good few years and it’s certainly the way body builders have achieved a smooth look across their whole bodies for years.

You would think that with this method of removing body hair you would need a lot of help but actually there is now a shaver or grooming tool available which has been specifically designed so that you can deal with your back hair yourself. It’s called the MANGROOMER Do-It-Yourself Electric Back Hair Shaver

Mangroomer for DIY back shaving

Mangroomer for DIY back shaving

As you can see it shaves a larger area than the norm with a 1.5″ blade and extends so that you can reach your own back. Its cutting edge design gives you a very close shave and prevents ingrowing hairs.

You will of course need a mirror with good lighting and maybe a hand mirror to be able to see but it should not be too much of a problem to get these and perform your own back hair removal as often as you like without incurring much in the way of ongoing cost – great for those on a low budget.

The only disadvantages with shaving is the rate of regrowth – you are going to have to carry out the operation regularly to maintain a smooth back – and also how your skin reacts to shaving.

You will probably find that your back skin is a little irritated as it is not used to shaving but this will not last. However if you have bad problems with ingrown hairs and razor bumps on your face you may also have problems with back shaving so you may want to look at other methods if that is the case, Otherwise the Mangroomer is well worth a try.

See here for details and over 200 positive buyer reviews of the Mangroomer

If you don’t have one of these razors and are relying on a standard safety or electric razor then you will need assistance on a regular basis. Do you know anyone who is willling to shave your back for you every day or two?

Waxing or Sugar Waxing

For back hair removal by waxing or sugar waxing you will definitely need assistance. Even Houdini I reckon could not wax his own back.

Back waxing can be easily performed professionally in a salon but it is quite costly to have this done regularly at around $50 a session in some cities and you may find it inconvenient to have regular appointments to take care of your back hair. The treatments would need to be repeated every 3 to 6 weeks and unfortunately the hair has to grow about an eigth to a quarter of an inch before the wax is able to grip hold of it so you will have to see some regrowth before you can get treatment again. The rate of regrowth depends on your own individual hair texture and regrowth rate.

If you have a willing partner you can save money by using a hot wax kit at home. It’s not too difficult after a little practice but it is a bit of a messy operation. Sugar waxing is great in this respect as any sticky residue can be easily washed off with clean water.

The main disadvantage with waxing is that it is quite painful as hairs are ripped out from the root as each strip of wax is removed and your skin will be left a bit red and sore for a while.

Depilatory Creams

Back hair can be removed using hair removal creams. You will probably be able to reach your own back to apply these so it is a method you can probably manage yourself which only involves applying the (rather smelly) cream and then waiting for around 5 to 10 minutes until the hair has dissolved before removal.

Hair regrowth is pretty quick with this method as, like shaving, it removes hair only from the skin surface. You will also find that you get through a lot of hair removal cream with this method of back hair removal and it can be an expensive way of maintaining your smooth back if you plan to use hair removal creams regularly.

Electrolysis for the back

Back hair removal by electrolysis is going to be a long and costly business as each hair from this large surface area has to be removed individually and may need several treatments to remove it permanently. It will be a bit painful too as each hair is removed and the follicle is destroyed. However you can be sure that it will be permanent in the end so if you really want to get rid of your hair for good then this can be a good way to go, especially if you are not talking about a full back area and maybe just the back of your shoulders etc.

Back Laser Hair Removal

This is one of the most popular methods of back hair removal and with good reason as laser treatment is able to deal with a large number of hairs in one session and is much quicker than electrolysis. It is expensive however and you will need several sessions and  afew thousand dollars to achieve a permanent reduction in back hair as well as follow up sessions to deal with any regrowth. For more details see laser hair treatment

Once you have thought about which methods for back hair removal might suit you, take the plunge and have a go. You will only know how your own skin and back hair reacts and which hair removal method truly suits you once you try it.

Facial Hair Remover

17 July, 2009 (13:48) | Hair Removal | By: Veronique

If you’re looking for the perfect facial hair remover you may have been looking a long time. There are none of them perfect. I have seen a lot of unwanted facial hair removal products in my time here both permanent and temporary however for some reason I have not come across the REM spring facial hair remover until today and judging by the customer reviews I may have been missing a trick.

Traditional Facial Hair Removal Methods

If you have unwanted facial hair you’re not alone – this problem affects more than 15% of women. It’s pretty distressing but there as more ways to get rid of hair on your face than you can shake a stick at so it’s certainly not an insurmountable problem – there’s no need to get depressed about it. You can do something about it!

Of course all methods of facial hair removal have their disadavantages (doesn’t everything) but just in case you haven’t tried them all and despaired of finding the right method for you I’ll just run through all the traditional remedies for getting rid of facial hair before taking a closer look at the new REM product.

REM Spring Facial Hair Remover

REM Spring Facial Hair Remover - a new and better method of removing unwanted facial hair?

Shaving – For men only unless you want to start developing a five o’clock shadow. Ladies, do not shave your facial hair ever again. There are plenty of better ways to deal with female facial hair.

Depilatory creams and lotions – You can buy special facial hair removal creams which you may wwant to use on the sensitive skin here instead of your regular depilatory cream. These are easy to use, fast and work like a charm. Only disadvantage is that the hair is “dissolved” just below the skin surface and so you’ll see regrowth within a few days when you have to repeat the treatment.

Plucking with tweezers – Tweezing is great for the odd stray hair (and it’s a great method for eyebrows) but difficult (and painful) for a whole mustache or sideburns type problem. It will take you forever but it can be done if you don’t like the other options. Can be difficult to see and get hold of every hair and repeated attempts on each hair mean that the area can get very red and sore. However hairs are pulled from the the root which means regrowth is slower than other temporary methods like hair removal creams.

Bleaching – Bleaching facial hair does not involve removing the hair so it is pain free. You can buy special cream bleach for the face and disguise dark hair by lightening it. Works for many but you may find you end up with a blond mustache which is only slightly less obvious than your dark one depending on the thickness of your hair.

Threading – Facial hair threading is a method which involves trapping hair between two twisted strands of thread and pulling it out. It is now performed on facial hair in a lot of salons (or you can do this yourself if you have the know-how). It’s very fast when carried out by a skilled technician and leaves your face hair free for a few weeks but you do need to set aside money and time for regular salon visits.A bit painful as hairs are pulled out from the root but for some reason seems to be less painful than waxing, probably because fewer hairs are pulled out in one go.

Waxing – Facial waxing is similar to threading however this can be carried out in the salon or at home. At home, consider cold wax strips which are simple to apply. Unfortunately they are still painful to remove (though bearable).

Laser hair removal for the face – Hair can be zapped in one session however you will need repeat visits and you may be left with some hair which is not permanently removed and grows back. The main disadvantage of this method is the expense. You will feel a bit of pain as hair follicles are being destroyed but a topical anaesthetic soothing gel may be applied to reduce this.

Electrolysis – This method results in permanent removal of the hair and is the best facial hair removal method for everyone who can afford it and has time for regular appointments. Each hair is treated ndividually with the insertion of a fine needle at the hair root through which an electric current is passed to kill the hair. As this method relies on precision in terms of where the current is applied and in treating the hair at the right stage in its growth cycle each hair may need to be removed several times. But after a few months to a year you will be permanently free of your facial hair problems.

REM facial hair remover

REM facial hair remover

REM Spring Facial Hair Remover – Now if you have worked through these unwanted facial hair removal methods and are not quite happy with any of them for one reason or another you might want to take a look at the REM facial hair remover which seems to be a good choice among the many facial hair removers on the market.

It is like length of spring that you move over your hair removing one or two hairs at a time in fast succession. I guess it’s a bit like threading in that respect which many women swear by but with this device you can take care of facial hair removal in your own home.

You get used to the operation of the device and the sensation quite quickly it seems. (Tip : If you are nervous about trying out a product on your face, practice on your legs first and get the hang of it there!)

I am generally skeptical of products like this as a rule (and with good reason as the scammers are all over the place when it comes to our most distressing problems) but the genuine reviews of buyers of this product are making me think otherwise. It is all the more believable as you see the negative as well as the positive so that you know exactly what you are getting with this unwanted hair remover.
