Threading Hair Removal

Threading is a method of hair removal which involves rolling twisted cotton threads over unwanted hair. The hairs get trapped between the threads and are pulled out by the root. This is a temporary method of hair removal most used on the face especially the brows. It is great for trapping and removing all the fine hair above the brows as well as below and leaves a very clean look (at least it does with an experienced practitioner!)

History of Thread Hair Removal

Threading is an ancient art which has been used for centuries in the Middle east and Asia and is thought to have originated in Turkey. It was used for removing all hair from the face including the eyebrows, sideburns, upper lip, hairline and cheeks at one time giving a very smooth look.

Can You Do It Yourself?

threading using ordinary thread

Threading uses ordinary cotton thread - cheap and cheerful

Girls in the parts of the world where hair threading is commonly used learn at their mother’s knew but if you are just starting out at the age of 23 you would need a lot of practice to do it well. My advice is to go to a skilled practitioner. If you want to have a go, visit a salon first to get a idea how the professionals do it and then practice on a part of your body which is less sensitive than your face and where the results won’t distress you. It can be quite painful if you don’t have the skill.

Hair threading removal just for faces?

It’s most commonly practiced on facial hair in the West but experienced practitioners can use threading to remove hair anywhere from your waist to your toes too. I just can’t imagine a Brazilian threading somehow but no doubt it can be done if you have the skill!

What’s Good About Threading?

It’s a very quick and inexpensive method of removing hair and it is less painful than many other methods although hair is pulled right from the roots. It seems that because threading is so fast and a whole row of hairs is removed at one time you don’t feel so much pain as you do with something like tweezing where hairs are pulled individually and the skin does not react as badly. As the top layer of skin is not removed with the hair, it is less likely to cause irritation or ingrown hairs. With facial threading you may find that some hair follicles become permanently damaged and the hair does not regrow so much but you can’t bet on this. Threading is quite long lasting in any case and you’ll be smooth for anything from 2 weeks to a month. You can pop into a threading salon and have your eyebrows done in just 15 minutes and in some place it costs just $5 or $10 – an easy lunch time job. As a result city center threading salons are spring up all over the place in recent years.

What’s Not So good?

Threading works best on flat areas of skin so it can be tricky to perform on some parts of the body (such as that Brazilian I was talking about). Like any method of hair removal which pulls hair from the roots you can get a bacterial infection called folliculitis but it is not very common. It’s also not great for skin with acne or other irritation but that is true of many methods of hair removal. Redness may occur after treatment to sensitive areas so it is not a good idea to have threading upper lip treatment or other face threading and then to go straight out on a hot date!

About Sugaring Hair Removal

Sugaring hair removal (aka sugar waxing) sounds like it will be a painless little process which would be sweet indeed. To be sure, it is a bit less painful than waxing and, if you do it yourself at home, a bit less messy too (because sugar wax dissolves quite easily in water) but it certainly isn’t painless.

You can buy sugar wax kits in the shops (many of the usual hair removal ranges will have what you need or you can look at the sugaring products produced by those who specialize in natural beauty items) or if you prefer to make your own, here’s a sugar wax recipe:-

Just use regular sugar, for sugar waxing

Just use regular sugar, for sugar waxing

Making Sugar Wax

Sugar Wax Ingredients

2 cups of regular granulated sugar
1/4 cup of water
1/4 cup of lemon juice

Method

Gently heat all the ingredients in a saucepan until the mixture starts to bubble and then use a sugar thermometer to continue heating until the mixture reaches 250 degrees Fahrenheit then pour it into a jar and allow it to cool enough so that it doesn’t burn your skin before using.

If you think it is about right you can test a small piece on the inside of your arm so that you know if it is oK to use or not before you go slapping it all over your legs or face.

If you decide to buy your sugar wax rather than make it (probably a good idea in the beginning until you get the hang of things) carefully follow the instructions in your sugaring wax kit to heat up the product. It is very important not to apply the wax to your skin when it is too hot. (Anyone who has been burned when making toffee or fudge will tell you that for nothing). Similarly (as mentioned above) if you make your own sugar wax make sure it is not too hot.

How to Apply Sugar wax

You apply the concoction just like any other wax, smoothing it on in the direction of hair growth with a wooden spatula then applying a fabric strip to the wax before pulling it off in one quick movement against the direction of hair growth and as close to the surface of your your skin as you can. If making your own kit make sure the fabric strips are not stretchy and can be easily pulled without tearing. Plain cotton from old sheets is ideal.

Then you repeat the whole painful operation until your whole leg or whatever is done.

You will get extremely sticky with either waxing or sugaring but with a sugaring wax you can wash any sticky residue off yourself (and even carpets and furniture) much more easily. The sugar dissolves in water whereas wax needs a specialist product to remove it. Nevertheless I would start any sugar hair removal without putting down plenty of old towels across all surfaces.

One thing which strikes me as strange is that sugaring hair removal is not used more in beauty salons. You’d think someone could do a marketing job on it or something and give it a trendy name and we would all be going for sugaring rather than waxing in the blink of an eye.

Which Lady Shaver?

A lady shaver is an electric shaver specially designed for use by women mainly on legs and under arms. Most are wet and dry shavers meaning that they can be used in and out of the shower on wet or dry skin. This makes them particularly useful. The main advantage of using an electric ladies shaver for hair removal is that you can’t cut yourself in the same way that you can with a normal razor. Like any kind of shaving, lady shavers are a quick method of getting rid of unwanted hair and pain free too (but unfortunately it grows back just as fast whether you use an electric shaver or a manual razor). In any case, it is convenient to be able to use the shaver on dry skin so you can “tidy up” quite quickly if you tend to leave things until the last minute.

If you have not used an electric lady shaver before you may be wondering how to choose one. There are so many on the market and to be honest, there is not an awful lot to distinguish between them. Here are a few things to consider when you buy a lady shaver:-

1. Shaver Head

The head of the lady shave is the part that comes into contact with your skin when removing hair. The lady shaver will have either a foil or trimmer type head. It is useful if the head is changeable as different shaver heads may suit different parts of you body and that way you get to experiment and find the best combination of head to use. Also a removable head helps with cleaning your lady shaver.

2. Style and Color

For the most part this is purely personal preference. If you’re going to use your shaver in the shower look for a shape that will be easy to grip.

3. Battery or Mains

Battery operated shavers are useful if you want to use your shaver in the shower or bath (mains power is not advisable in that case) and you can get shavers with normal batteries and those with rechargeable batteries. A rechargeable shaver means you will not run out of batteries and it will be less expensive to maintain.

4. Waterproof

Can the shaver be used in the shower and on both wet and dry skin?

5. Any Extras Included

You usually get items such as a travel pouch, cleaning brush and batteries along with your lady shave. The extras generally don’t provide a compelling enough reason to buying one shaver over another. Some have attachments for different parts of the body such as a bikini attachment (see the Panasonic lady shaver pictured) which may be useful to you. Some shavers have a lubricating system which may be useful if you have very sensitive skin. If you are looking for an epilator (a kind of hair plucker machine) you can sometimes get one which has an alternative head which can be used as a lady shaver. This will only be worth it (in terms of price) if you will use the epilator regularly along with the shaving head as epilators are generally more expensive than lady shavers.

6. Guarantee

You will generally get a one year guarantee with your shaver. Check that you do.

7. Brand

Look for a well known brand you trust and pay a bit more or pick up an unknown make for very little Some well-known brands other than the Panasonic are the Braun lady shaver and the Remington lady shaver.

8. Price

Most well-known brands of ladies electric shaver are around the same price but look for special offers and discounts where you can save quite a bit. You’ll find a whole selection here.

New Hair Removal Treatments

I am constantly on the lookout for new hair removal treatments because the ones that we have at the moment are far from ideal in one shape or form. Every one has a significant disadvantage.

Laser Hair Removal

If you look at laser hair removal treatments, then the main disadvantage is cost (see Average laser hair removal price) and of course, it does not work well on some coloring types as the equipment relies on targeting the pigment in hair and avoiding the pigment in skin. If they are too similar or there’s not much pigment in your hair then it’s a problem. In a nutshell, it means laser treatment for hair removal is not great for you if you have dark skin or fair hair.

laser hair removal

Laser hair removal is not for everyone

Even if you are a good candidate for treatment there is the inconvenience of getting to the clinic (hopefully there is one near you) for several sessions and you have to suffer the pain of having a laser beam directed at your skin. Of course, it’s not so much actual agonizing pain as the discomfort of having a whole heap of mini rubber bands pinged at you one after the other in quick succession but you’d still rather not suffer it.

Electrolysis

Of the permanent hair removal treatments available, however, laser hair treatment still has a lot to offer because the other one, electrolysis, works well on everyone but it is very slow especially if you need or want to treat a large area such as your back or legs.

You will need many electrolysis sessions over a long time and the costs mount up for that too. Each hair has to be dealt with individually and usually more than once as they are only killed if you zap them in the right place and at the right stage in the growth cycle. That means many inconvenient appointments at the salon for months on end! Still, it is the best of the facial hair removal treatments on offer at the moment because it gets rid of the problem permanently and you’ll never suffer any regrowth.

Temporary Hair Removal Methods

Even though laser treatment and electrolysis involve inconvenient sessions at a salon or clinic, it’s not to say that anything else is any more convenient. Every other hair removal treatment has to be done over and over again because the hair grows back – and a lot quicker than you want it to. The main salon treatment for unwanted hair is waxing and that is painful too. It will leave your skin red and sore for a few hours but at least it only needs to be redone every few weeks. Nevertheless it’s the best temporary solution we have at the moment for keeping you hair free and smooth for a while and it can be used on all parts of the body. Threading hair removal would be a contender in the salon treatments you can have for hair removal but it is generally only practiced (at least in the west) on the face.

So these hair removal methods are basically the only treatments you can have at the moment to get hair removed. I’m always amazed that they have not come up with anything new in the last 40 or so years (since laser hair removal became a possibility). Surely someone could have invented some smart new hair removal treatments by now – you know the one that is cheap, permanent, fast and pain free. We can but live in hope.

Brazilian Hair Removal

I have to confess I never tried Brazilian hair removal in my life. I’m such a coward. The whole idea is a pain too far for me even after going through childbirth twice – and maybe because I no longer wear the tiny skimpy bikinis that I could a few years ago as a result of said childbirth it never seems quite the necessity that it might otherwise have done. A bit of tidying up down there in the summertime is as much as I get time for these days and I confess it does feel good when I wear my swimsuit and there are no stragglers showing, so I quite understand if Brazilian bikini hair removal is something you want to look into.

There are only really a couple of processes that you can use for genital hair removal if you want the full Brazilian (leaving just a thin “landing strip” of hair at the front), which is what you really need if you want no hair showing at all in the tiniest of bikinis and especially if you wear a thong.

Brazilian Wax Hair Removal

This is the most common form of Brazilian and it is easy to find a beauty therapist experienced in the procedure at most salons. The more experienced the therapist the more they will put you at your ease, carry out the process as painlessly as possible and do what they can to protect your modesty during the treatment difficult though that is given where you’re removing hair from. Friends who have this done tell me that there is nothing to fear about the pain. It is quickly over and then forgotten and then they are delighted with the results which last for about 4 weeks. Feel free to have a go and share your experiences by leaving a comment!

Brazilian Laser Hair Removal

Now I think if I was going to have a Brazilian I would be saving up my money for this because after a few sessions you experience a reduction in hair growth which might very well mean not having to deal with the pubic hair problem again or just having a few top up treatments to keep things neat. And by all accounts this is less painful than waxing “down there”. The cost of Brazilian bikini laser hair removal will be around $1000 for a few sessions so it’s not cheap but if you add up the cost of getting waxed regularly it will easily pay for itself over a few years. Lasers have become more effective in recent years and if you have a good technician you should get some great results with it.

Other Brazilian Hair Removal Methods

As for other methods you could shave but you are likely to get a rash and the area is awkward to deal with. I would say fine for a trim but not for a full Brazilian. As for depilatory cream it is fine (and effective) for the bikini line but there is no such thing as a Brazilian hair removal cream. The chemicals in the cream are not made for use on your more sensitive areas.

Female Facial Hair Removal

There are several solutions for female facial hair removal so there is no need to despair if you have a problem with unwanted facial hair. What you do not want to do, in any event, is to mimic the male method of facial hair removal and start shaving the hair off. All you will do if you do that is to give yourself a potential 5 o’ clock shadow and stubble problem.

Here are the methods I would consider useful for unwanted facial hair removal for women.

1. Depilatory Cream

Depilatory ranges such as Nair hair removal cream and Veet usually have special facial hair removal creams with a more sensitive formula than general depilatory creams. They are very effective at removing hair and, as long as they do not irritate you, they leave skin looking healthy and smooth.

female facial hair removal : stubble from shaving

Stubble needs to be removed daily : This is the kind of problem you don't need on your face

Remember to do a patch test if you use a facial hair removal cream in case your skin reacts badly to the chemicals in the product. The main problems with these creams is that you have to repeat the process every few days as the hair grows back quickly (although not so quickly as shaving).

2. Bleaching

Bleaching is not really a method of removing facial hair but it can be useful to disguise very fine yet dark down growing on your face. Once the hair is lightened it will be much less obvious. It may be all you need to do to correct your problem so it is worth a try if the hair growth is fine. You can bleach specially formulated for facial hair such as Jolen cream bleach.

3. Waxing

You can buy facial hair removal wax strips which allow you to pull the hair out from the roots using cold wax so that there is no chance of burning your face with a hot wax solution. These cold wax strips are generally quite effective and you can cut the strips in sizes to suit and sort out the problem in the privacy of your own home. Your skin will be a little sore after waxing but redness should settle down within an hour or two.

4. Laser Hair Removal

You can have professional facial laser hair removal and, if you have skin and hair which reacts well to the treatment, your hair growth will be noticeably reduced and may even disappear for good. Laser treatment is fairly expensive but as the face is such a small area it is in the reach of many. You will probably need six or so sessions costing around $100 each. Laser treatment works best if your skin is light and your hair is dark and may not work at all on fair hair or dark skin.

5. Electrolysis

The best way of all to remove facial hair for women is electrolysis. Although electrolysis is quite slow and you may need a number of sessions over many months it is going to be permanent by the end of your course of treatment and you will never have to worry about the problem again. In the absence of a facial hair remover in the shape of a magic wand it is the best solution we have to female facial hair removal at the moment and there does not seem to be anything coming up to replace it. See Permanent facial hair removal for more about facial electrolysis or laser treatment.

What’s New in Hair Removal Methods?

Now that we are in 2010, you would think that there would be more than a couple of new ways to remove unwanted hair. After all scientists have got us to the moon. You would not think it was too much to ask to find some outstanding permanent hair removal methods. But apparently it is. Perhaps those scientists are just not focusing on things which really matter to our everyday lives.

Anyway, just to round up on the latest, here are the best hair removal techniques in 2010. There are probably some things which are new to you, especially if you have just started doing something about excess hair or have not refreshed your methods of hair removal for a year or two.

Facial Hair Removal Methods

The best way of removing facial hair permanently is still by electrolysis and this has been around for years. What you may not know is you can buy an electrolysis kit for home use, although it has to be said the One Touch electrolysis machine (which is the best of the home electrolysis systems) takes a little getting used to and you should practice on other parts of your body before tackling your face. As for temporary methods, threading has become fashionable as a salon treatment for removing hair from your face in recent years. If you just want a quick tool for getting rid of facial hair at home take a look at the REM spring facial hair remover which is a nifty little gadget for removing hair quickly similar to threading (but easier to do yourself).

Body Hair Removal Methods

The laser hair removal methods come into their own for getting rid of body hair. Nothing comes close to them in terms of speed of operation and being able to treat large areas in one go. Although you won’t necessarily get permanent removal of all the hair, you should get enough of a permanent reduction to be happy with the treatment. You will also find that techniques and machines have improved in recent years, so much so that success rates are higher than they used to be. Also, you’ll find home laser hair removal machines on the market which you may not have been aware of before. These are not as effective as the machines in clinics but the best machines do work over time (and the costs are far lower than for professional laser hair treatment).

Leg Hair Removal Methods

Epilators have been around for a while however there are major innovations in pain relief. A lot of work by manufacturers of these products has gone into reducing the discomfort with this hair removal method. The best of these techniques seems to be the inclusion of a massage element which soothes the skin as you go. For example, the Braun Silk Epil pictured has “4-way moving massaging rollers stimulate skin with micro pulses before and after hair is removed to minimize pulling sensation”.

Bikini Hair Removal Methods

There is no fundamental change in the hair removing methods for the bikini line, but you will find that, as the years have gone by, all salons and clinics are now well practiced in the techniques and so you should have an easier time of it. If you had turned up at a salon twenty years ago for bikini line waxing, chances are you would have been made to feel awkward and the beauty therapist would have been struggling a bit. Not so any more. You can expect to feel at ease and the whole operation will be carried out smoothly and quickly.

Underarm Hair Removal for Men

Thirty years ago men would not have given a thought to removing hair from under their arms. These days, however, men are practicing hair removal from many parts of their bodies and with more and more bare backs and chests in particular appearing on the scene then the subject is likely to come up.

Celebrities and male models are generally the ones who start a trend. They were the ones who first posed with smooth chests and we could see that chest hair removal might be worth the effort if you had a great body to show off. With no hair to mask the body contours, there was nothing to prevent our full admiration of their pectoral muscles!

Men who were out of the public eye then began to follow suit. They went on to remove hair from backs and shoulders as well as chests and sometimes legs. Even now among celebrities, however, complete underarm hair removal is not the norm. In some ways, perhaps men feel that they need to mark themselves out as different to women to emphasize their maleness.

Underarm Hair Removal For Men

Underarm Hair Removal For Men : a beard growing from the armpits would not be a good look here

If complete removal of the hair from under the arms is not usual in men, that is not to say that the area cannot be “tidied up”. If hair is left to grow naturally then it can get quite long and unsightly. No one really wants a long beard growing from their arm pits and certainly not poking out from a sleeveless t-shirt when they are trying to show off their biceps.

All the underarm hair really needs is trimming with scissors so that it is not so long and obvious. This is just a case of grooming rather than removal and it helps with cleanliness and hygiene as there is less hair to trap bacteria.

It can be a little awkward to reach the area so cut the hair in front of a mirror so that you can see what you are doing. Cut a little at a time so that you can see the effects before cutting more. You do not want to cut the hair so short that it just looks like you have regrowth from shaving rather than a neatly trimmed underarm area.

Guide to Plucking Facial Hair

Plucking means removing hair with tweezers and is therefore sometimes called “tweezing”. It is generally used on individual hairs on the face, particularly the eyebrows and it is also a quick and easy solution to getting rid of the odd stray hair from the chin and other facial areas. Plucking facial hair is easy to do. It is accurate as you are dealing with each hair individually and you can do it anytime, anywhere without making an appointment or doing a lot of preparation. You see a hair growing in the wrong place and can immediately deal with it – it’s gone in a flash! It is also great to get rid of any odd hairs left behind by other hair removal methods.

How to Pluck Facial Hair?

There is really no mystery to plucking.

  1. First of all you need a good pair of precision tweezers with slanted or pointed ends, like those below by Tweezerman, the company which is widely recognized to have the best tweezers (i.e. the easiest to use) on the market.
  2. Make sure you work in a well-lit room and have a good mirror. A lighted magnifying makeup mirror like this one by Conair helps enormously and it means you don’t need full daylight to pluck out hair!
  3. Wash and exfoliate the area where you are going to be plucking and make sure that the pores are open. The easiest way to do this is to pluck right after a shower.
  4. Make sure the tweezers are clean by using rubbing alcohol or other antiseptic on them
  5. Grab each individual hair as close as possible to the skin and pull in the direction of hair growth.
  6. Wipe over the area where you have been plucking with a skin-friendly antiseptic lotion afterwards.

Any Drawbacks?

  • This is really only for female facial hair removal. Plucking a full beard is not really practical!
  • Plucking hair can be painful. If you do it right after a shower then your pores will be open and it will be easier however.
  • It is slow and time consuming dealing with each individual hair. That’s probably why even though the ancient Egyptians thought it was a good idea, plucking body hair has never caught on in modern times.
  • You need good eyesight, a steady hand and a magnifying mirror to grab each hair. Just when the hairs start to grow on your chin during the menopause, your eyes start getting worse! Still, plucking chin hair is a great solution to get rid of them!
  • Some people have problems with ingrown hairs when they pluck. You can minimize the danger of this by making sure your skin and tweezers are scrupulously clean before you begin, exfoliating your skin to keep it free from dead skin cells and making sure your pores are open by holding a warm wash cloth to your skin before plucking. After removing the hair do not apply anything other than a light soothing lotion such as aloe vera or antiseptic lotion before the pores have had a chance to recover.
  • You should not pluck facial hair from moles or from broken or sore skin. Instead cut the hair off close to your skin on that part of your face.
  • It can be difficult to do the initial reshaping of eyebrows with tweezers yourself. The best solution is to have your eyebrows shaped at a salon and then do the upkeep yourself at home by plucking out any strays daily.
  • Some say that plucking makes two hairs grow in the place of one. Not true at all. In fact, plucking makes the hair growth weaker. This means you need to take care over-plucking your eyebrows as they may not grow back and you will have to fill in the area with eyebrow pencil. Unfortunately over plucking does not seem to work so well on the upper lip!

If you have more than a few stray hairs, consider other types of face hair removal. The best method of permanent facial hair removal is electrolysis. It is a bit of a pain (literally) going for many appointments over months on end but you will be left with smooth hair free skin on your face and that has to be worth it. If you just want something you can do quickly at home try facial waxing. You can use cold wax strips to get rid of patches of hair and then use your tweezers on any strays which remain. Make sure that you do this some time before you go out however as it can leave your skin a bit red for a few hours. Alternatively, you could also try this facial hair remover for a quick solution.

Body Hair Removal Pills

Body hair can be deemed sexy if you are Tom Selleck and his maverick mustache or it it can cause huge annoyance and misery. Some men like their body hair, others want rid of it and prefer a smooth look but for women, it can be very hard to live with and many women say too much body hair makes them feel like a freak.

Surveys have shown that up to 80% of women, due to excessive hormones caused by anything from an overactive pituitary gland to the ovary over working, are affected by excess hair and hirsutism (the excess growth of body hair on women) in unwanted areas of the body is a real issue for some.

There are a number of ways to treat this problem and one of those is a pill treatment. Despite laser treatment and electrolysis being available, everyone knows that these process are painful to a certain extent and in the case of electrolysis, it can take a painfully long time too.

Many women would prefer just to swallow body hair removal pills and be done with it. A magic pill like that would just be more convenient and a potentially cheaper method of treatment. However, there are a lot of rumors about pill treatments. Are they a myth or are they magic?

There are really just a few body hair pill treatments that are worth looking at.

Hormonal Treatment

ll the treatments which have an effect on body hair are hormonal and as such you need to take the pills under medical supervision. Never buy anything from the Internet or through mail order as you do not know what the product will do to you or how it will affect other medical conditions you have or treatments you are using.

Hormone treatment can help to slow down hair growth or stop it altogether but would generally only be given where growth is badly affecting the patient. Also hormone treatment will not actually work for hair removal. You have to remove it by the usual hair removal methods until the hormones take effect. Hormones take 6-12 months to have a full effect on thinning of the hair.

Oral Contraceptive

The birth control pill can help to affect the hormonal production in the body. It is best to choose one that can deal with hirsutism directly such as ones that contain an anti-androgenic progesterone and estrogen e.g. drospirenone or cyproterone. The side effects may be quite harsh so they are not to everyone’s liking.

Spironolactone

You could take a dose of 50-100mg of this on a daily basis to reduce hair growth and it can be combined with the oral contraceptive pill to get better results. Again, you are at risk of side effects so always consult a qualified medical practitioner.

Although body hair removal pills are out there and available, they are not suited for everyone. If you have a real problem however, it is worth asking your doctor about whether these would be effective in your case. Just don’t treat yourself with any old junk. If you buy hair removal pills online or from ads that promise miracles “or your money back” you only have yourself to blame if things go wrong and you risk much more than your money.
