Facial Hair Remover

If you’re looking for the perfect facial hair remover you may have been looking a long time. There are none of them perfect. I have seen a lot of unwanted facial hair removal products, both permanent and temporary, in my time reviewing products here, however for some reason I have not come across the REM spring facial hair remover until today and judging by the customer reviews I may have been missing a trick.

Traditional Facial Hair Removal Methods

If you have unwanted facial hair you’re not alone – this problem affects more than 15% of women. It’s pretty distressing but there as more ways to get rid of hair on your face than you can shake a stick at so it’s certainly not an insurmountable problem – there’s no need to get depressed about it. You can do something about it!

Of course all methods of facial hair removal have their disadvantages (doesn’t everything) but just in case you haven’t tried them all and despaired of finding the right method for you I’ll just run through all the traditional remedies for getting rid of facial hair before taking a closer look at the new REM product.

REM Spring Facial Hair Remover

REM Spring Facial Hair Remover - a new and better method of removing unwanted facial hair?

Shaving – For men only unless you want to start developing a five o’clock shadow. Ladies, do not shave your facial hair ever again. There are plenty of better ways to deal with female facial hair.

Depilatory creams and lotions – You can buy special facial hair removal creams which you may want to use on the sensitive skin here instead of your regular depilatory cream. These are easy to use, fast and work like a charm. Only disadvantage is that the hair is “dissolved” just below the skin surface and so you’ll see regrowth within a few days at which point you have to repeat the treatment.

Plucking with tweezers – Tweezing is great for the odd stray hair (and it’s a great method for eyebrows) but difficult (and painful) for a whole mustache or sideburns type problem. It will take you forever but it can be done if you don’t like the other options. Can be difficult to see and get hold of every hair and repeated attempts on each hair mean that the area can get very red and sore. However hairs are pulled from the the root which means regrowth is slower than other temporary methods like hair removal creams.

Bleaching – Bleaching facial hair does not involve removing the hair so it is pain free. You can buy special cream bleach for the face and disguise dark hair by lightening it. Works for many but you may find you end up with a blond mustache which is only slightly less obvious than your dark one depending on the thickness of your hair.

Threading – Facial hair threading is a method which involves trapping hair between two twisted strands of thread and pulling it out. It is now performed on facial hair in a lot of salons (or you can do this yourself if you have the know-how). It’s very fast when carried out by a skilled technician and leaves your face hair free for a few weeks but you do need to set aside money and time for regular salon visits.A bit painful as hairs are pulled out from the root but for some reason seems to be less painful than waxing, probably because fewer hairs are pulled out in one go.

Waxing – Facial waxing is similar to threading however this can be carried out in the salon or at home. At home, consider cold wax strips which are simple to apply. Unfortunately they are still painful to remove (though bearable).

Laser hair removal for the face – Hair can be zapped in one session however you will need repeat visits and if you are looking for permanent facial hair removal this is not perfect as you may be left with some hair which is not permanently removed and grows back. The main disadvantage of this method is the expense as the cost of laser hair removal is high. You will also feel a bit of pain as hair follicles are being destroyed but a topical anesthetic soothing gel may be applied to reduce this.

Electrolysis – This method results in permanent removal of the hair and is the best facial hair removal method for everyone who can afford it and has time for regular appointments. Each hair is treated individually with the insertion of a fine needle at the hair root through which an electric current is passed to kill the hair. As this method relies on precision in terms of where the current is applied and in treating the hair at the right stage in its growth cycle each hair may need to be removed several times. But after a few months to a year you will be permanently free of your facial hair problems.

REM Spring Facial Hair Remover – Now if you have worked through these unwanted facial hair removal methods and are not quite happy with any of them for one reason or another you might want to take a look at the REM facial hair remover which seems to be a good choice among the many facial hair removers on the market.

It is like length of spring that you move over your hair removing one or two hairs at a time in fast succession. I guess it’s a bit like threading in that respect which many women swear by but with this device you can take care of facial hair removal in your own home.

You get used to the operation of the device and the sensation quite quickly it seems. (Tip : If you are nervous about trying out a product on your face, practice on your legs first and get the hang of it there!)

I am generally skeptical of products like this as a rule (and with good reason as the scammers are all over the place when it comes to our most distressing problems) but the genuine reviews of buyers of this product are making me think otherwise. It is all the more believable as you see the negative as well as the positive so that you know exactly what you are getting with this unwanted hair remover.

Nair Hair Removal

Nair is one of the best known brands in the beauty world and I thought it was about time I looked at what they had to offer us in the struggle with keeping our skin hair free.

The Nair hair removal products range mainly consists of hair removal creams and lotions (for which they are best known) and products for waxing. In each of these product areas Nair are constantly innovating and making improvements large and small. Even if it is just an easier application method, a better fragrance or clearer packaging it helps improve the hair removal experience which quite honestly could do with some help! It is no one’s way to spend a great afternoon (even a wet one).

All Nair hair remover lotions and creams work on the basis of a strong chemical breaking down the components of the hair and dissolving it slightly below the skin surface. Success depends on how your skin and hair react to the strength of chemicals in the product. If the chemical is too strong for your skin, it may become sore. If the chemical is not strong enough for your hair, it won’t dissolve it.

Nair smoothing effects cream

This accounts for the sometimes very different opinions and reviews that you get about products like this because it depends so much on the balance between your skin sensitivity and the strength of your hair and the actual strength of the product. I do know that if you don’t get on well with one formula, another may be just right for you. It may be a small thing like how your skin reacts to the fragrance or the softening agent added. So it’s worth persevering because most people find hair removal creams and lotions an easy option for fast and pain-free hair removal. Just don’t forget to do a patch test to make sure your skin does not react to the chemicals in the lotion.

Anyway, let’s see what Nair products have to offer. I have picked out some of the best selling lines to give you an idea of what to look out for on the drug store shelves (or you can order any of the hair removal products pictured online (and find out even more information and reviews) by clicking on the picture or the MORE INFO link in the description.

Chest Hair Removal

It has become fashionable these days for men to remove chest hair – every male model, film or sports star seems to show off a six pack and a smooth hair-free chest.

But if you want to get into chest hair removal how exactly should you go about it? The thing is there are more male chest hair removal methods and products than you can shake a stick at and any one of them might suit you depending on your budget and pain threshold!

Waxing Your Chest

male chest before and after waxing

male chest before and after waxing

This is a fast and relatively inexpensive method for removing hair from a large area of your body and therefore is pretty good for chests. The process involves smearing (usually hot) wax onto your chest, applying a strip of cloth to the wax then pulling off the strip once the wax has hardened around the hair (after a few seconds). Chest waxing can be pretty painful however and leave you with a glowing red chest (until it calms down – usually a few hours later). Regrowth is slow and it may be that you can go 4 to 6 weeks between treatments to maintain a smooth look. It’s best to go for a professional waxing treatment the first time you do this to get an idea of the process and to see if it suits you. After that you may want to think about purchasing a waxing kit which will save money and allow you to deal with your chest hair at home. Just make sure you have the courage to peel off those strips!

Laser Chest Hair Removal

If you have the budget (a few hundred dollars per session) having laser hair removal treatment is a great way of permanently reducing the hair on your chest. It is a quick process, less painful than waxing although you will still feel some discomfort (like being pinged by little elastic bands). You will need about six laser treatment sessions however to get rid of your chest hair and may need top ups to deal with any regrowth after the course of sessions is complete. Do remember that fashions change however. The current fashion is for smooth chests. When (and if) hairy chests are in again you will no longer have that option. If this worries you, use a temporary hair removal method such as waxing instead.

Shaving Chest Hair

This is the least expensive chest hair removal method although you will have to shell out for a quality razor to do the job well and take time and care in avoiding nicks and cuts. The disadvantages you will most likely know from shaving your face. Your skin can end up irritated by the shaving process itself – although not half so irritated and itchy as you will feel when the stubble grows back!

Chest Hair Trimming

Norelco Bodygroom

Norelco Bodygroom CLICK image for details

As an alternative to complete chest hair removal, you could trim your chest hair to give a cleaner more defined look to your chest. Trimming chest hair by hand can be laborious if you have a lot but you can easily do this with a tool such as the Norelco BodyGrooming System which is designed to do the job perfectly and give you an even well groomed look using one of three attachment combs.

If you are planning to shave your chest then trim the hair first before shaving to make shaving easier and cut down irritation. You will find it easier to trim dry hair (before your shower) and the to shave afterwards.

Removing Chest Hair with Depilatory Cream

There are creams and lotions which are specially designed to remove male body hair. You apply the product over your skin, leave it for a few minutes and then remove it along with the hair. Result – smooth chest but only for a few days as hair grows back quite quickly. However you will not find the regrowth so troublesome as with shaving. If you would like to give this pain-free method a try take a look at products such as Veet or Nair hair removal cream for men. Just be sure to read the instructions and do a skin test before proceeding to use the product for a whole chest hair removal session!

Permanent Facial Hair Removal

If you have unwanted facial hair then you want it to be gone for good and never have to worry about it again. But what are your options for permanent facial hair removal?

Surprisingly despite endless research done over the years you still have only one option for complete permanent removal of facial hair and that is electrolysis. Although facial laser hair removal can promise a permanent reduction in hair growth only electrolysis has been proven to offer permanent hair removal.

permanent facial hair removal

Permanent facial hair removal can improve your confidence

If you have extensive areas of excess hair on your face you may still want to consider laser hair removal as this is considerably faster (and a bit less painful) than electrolysis. Though you will need several sessions to deal with your excess hair you will get a permanent reduction in growth. And you may then be able to get by with a few top up sessions or even just tweezing out the odd stray hair if you are not lucky enough to achieve permanent removal.

However if you have a small area to treat then my recommendation for permanent hair removal remains electrolysis. The hairs are treated and removed one by one making it a long drawn-out process. However, slowly but surely they will disappear for good. (Like laser hair removal for the face (or anywhere else) you have to “catch” the hairs at the right stage of regrowth to make sure the follicle is killed and unfortunately you can’t tell at what stage each hair is until it tells you by not growing back!)

Both electrolysis and laser hair removal are expensive and you have to be able to afford a whole course of treatment not just a single session at the salon but I really do think it is worth the expense to achieve permanent facial hair removal. Many girls feel like a new person when they get rid of this annoying and embarrassing problem. I know – I was one of them. And I have never looked back or ever regretted the money spent on those treatments.

If professional treatments are beyond your budget, then there is an alternative in the One Touch home electrolysis system. it’s not ideal to use a DIY approach for treating your face and I certainly would not start on my face until I had built up some skill with the machine but it is a very low cost solution if you truly can’t afford electrolysis.

By the way you may see ads about the place for permanent facial hair removal cream. There are some creams available on prescription which may help but I have yet to see anything as effective as electrolysis (or even laser hair removal) at removing facial hair permanently.

Hair Remover

Oh how I wish I had a magic hair remover that would just whisk hair away never to be seen again without any mess or pain and we could give up the whole miserable hair removal process. Maybe I’m having a bad day but suddenly every hair removal method look like not quite good enough. I am coping quite well as I have my methods worked out but I wish I didn’t have to bother. And I’m sure many men would rather not shave too. Maybe the answer is that we should forget hair removers and just give ourselves a break and love ourselves just the way we are. But I’d still rather have a hair remover to work it’s magic and make me smooth and hair-free without the bother.

What exactly have I got against every hair removal method today?

Finding the Perfect Hair remover is such a pain

Finding the Perfect Hair remover is such a pain

1. Pain

Either you remove hair from the surface of the skin without pain and it grows back in a couple of days or you have the pain of removing it from the root. It hurts – no two ways about it. Even if you pay big bucks for a permanent solution you are still getting rid of the hair at the follicle and that means pain. Some devices are on the market like the Epila laser hair remover say they are pain free but pain free generally means that they don’t work!

2. Time

Removing hair eats up your time whether it’s shaving, waiting for depilatory cream to work or getting to appointments at a salon. It takes up hours of your precious time (and even days and weeks over your lifetime). You’ll always find ads for a quick facial hair remover or a fast permanent hair remover but they are never quite as speedy as you’d like i.e. taking no time at all.

3. Mess

If you confine the whole thing to a salon then they get to deal with any mess (and no doubt you pay for that) but if you remove hair at home it’s you who has to clean up any sticky wax residue or any blobs of depilatory cream which fall on the floor. Anyone had to clean Nair hair remover cream from the bedroom carpet like me?

4. Cost

We either pay a big cost for a permanent hair removal method or we pay over and over for waxing treatments (or home wax products), depilatory creams and razors. We buy waxing kits and epilators. We buy facial hair removers, cold wax strips and bleach. Our money could be better spent on more fun stuff if we didn’t care about our unwanted hair.

Never mind, forgive my rant! Despite all that I will still be continuing my hair removal routines and testing with all kinds of hair removers always looking for a better hair remover that will reduce the pain, time, cost and mess. I like my smooth skin! Just a pity we have not found the ideal solution yet!

Face Hair Removal – The Best Method

You may have been thinking about face hair removal for some time wondering what to do about it or maybe you’ve tried a few ways to remove your unwanted facial hair and have found them far from ideal. I know, I tried a few myself many moons ago before I found a permanent way to deal with facial hair.

But I’m not going to tell you about a miracle product that I tried and all the hair was gone like in those scam ads. Believe me there are no such miracle products (although I wish there were). In fact, there is only one proven and FDA approved method to permanently get rid of facial hair. So guess what, I used it!

You see the best method is electrolysis – it’s as old as the hills but it works and it’s still the only way to remove every hair you want rid of permanently.

Face hair removal by electrolysis

Face hair removal by electrolysis

Of course facial laser hair removal works permanently too to an extent (and may be best if you have large amounts of facial hair to deal with as it is faster and less painful to deal with larger areas) but it does not promise permanent removal of every hair just a permanent reduction in hair growth.

In any case I had relatively few hairs to deal with and with electrolysis they were gone and have not come back decades later. So I can vouch for the performance of the solution.

If you’re considering face hair removal I would go along to a local licensed salon and talk to them about electrolysis for your face and see if it’s a solution for you too. It can take some months of short 15 minute treatments to rid yourself of unwanted hair but the sooner you start the sooner you will be free of the problem.

Of the temporary methods of facial hair removal there’s really nothing ideal due to regrowth problems but you may find a facial depilatory cream is good for a few days and waxing for a few weeks if your skin can stand up to the treatment OK and does not become too sore.

If you only have the odd stray hair on chin or upper lip then plucking with tweezers is just fine although you should not pull the hairs from moles – you should treat these by snipping with scissors close to the skin surface rather than treating them with normal face hair removal methods.

GiGi Wax

If you are looking for home waxing supplies then it’s good to go with a brand that professional beauticians choose more than any other and thats GiGi wax. It’s a brand that is synonymous with quality, purity and natural ingredients in the world of beauty waxing.

If you have decided to try home waxing then you are probably already familiar with the benefits – perhaps from having treatment in a salon. You will get fast results and smooth skin for weeks on end. A little (temporary) redness and pain has to be worth it to achieve this.

When you decide to try the DIY approach make sure that you have all the equipment you need to carry out waxing like the professionals – GiGi microwave wax or a GiGi wax warmer and wax of your choice, strips for removing the wax and then a wax removal product to get rid of any sticky residue.

GiGi Professional Waxing Kit

GiGi Professional Waxing Kit

If you are unfamiliar with waxing it will be so worth booking a professional treatment at a spa or salon before attempting the process yourself at home. Whether or not you use a professional product like GiGi wax or not, first hand experience of how to remove hair by waxing will be just what you need to make the process go smoothly the first time you do it.

The company actually has quite a large product range which can be quite overwhelming when it comes to choosing the right product. However, it’s not a real problem as all of the products are safe for delicate and sensitive skin.

You are sure to find just the wax formula which appeals if you try out one or two of the GiGi wax products the first few times and get a feel for the formula and fragrance which appeals most. The natural ingredients such as honey, milk and chocolate sound (and smell) so appealing you will probably want them all and have to remind yourself you are talking about using them to rip your hair out from the roots :)

Gigi waxing products are applied in the same way as any other wax product. Clean the area to be treated. Warm the wax to the right temperature (warm but not so hot that the wax burns your skin). Smear on the wax in the direction of hair growth and immediately apply a waxing strip. Once the wax has had a chance to adhere to the hair (a few seconds) peel back the strip in one quick movement against the direction of hair growth.

If you are looking for a quality waxing product then take a look at the GiGi wax range right here and you’ll find everything you need at discounted prices.

Wax Warmer

A wax warmer is probably not something you hankered after all your life. For a large part you probably never even knew they existed but if you have decided that waxing is the hair removal method for you then it’s a great idea to buy one.

It’s a great alternative to using cold wax strips or microwave wax if you decide to try waxing at home. Warm wax is more effective than cold and a wax warmer will allow you can carry out hot wax hair removal treatments like the professionals.

It heats the wax to a constant temperature (hot enough to adhere well to the skin and open up the hair follicles a bit but not so hot that you burn yourself). This is quite tricky with microwave wax. It also means you can heat the product in the room where you want to carry out the waxing treatment (which is presumably not in the kitchen where your microwave is).

Gigi wax Warmer

wax warmer by GiGi

There are many different brands of wax warmers. Most hair removal brands and many small electrical personal grooming brands have them.

The most popular machine is the GiGi wax warmer which is the brand favored by professional beauticians (and the brand I have myself) but there are many more – some of them with systems where you roll on the wax for easier application. Take a look at the hair removal wax warmer range here for an idea of the different types of wax warmer you can buy and discounted prices on all brands.

After you have tried heating wax in a proper wax warmer for the first time after battling with wax in a pan or microwave before, you will wonder why you waited so long to buy yourself one of these little machines. It makes the whole job so much easier and less messy.

Depilatory Cream : the Best and Worst

Depilatory cream is a popular way of removing unwanted hair. It is cheap, effective and convenient to use yourself at home and is a way of removing hair painlessly (unlike many other methods!)

Removing hair for aesthetic reasons has been a custom it seems almost since time began and depilatory creams and potions have been around in various forms since ancient times although luckily the format has changed from the often hazardous ingredients used by the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans (arsenic and lime are no long present thank goodness).

Hair removal creams act on the keratin in the hair structure and dissolve it so that the hair falls away. Despite containing quite harsh chemicals (even these days) the creams are reasonably gentle of the skin and you will find various formulations to cope with sensitive skin and all areas of the body too. For example, you should be able to find specialist facial hair removal cream as well as cream for removing hair from the bikini line.

Hair Removal Creams are a speedy solution to getting rid of hair

Depilatory Lotions and Creams are a speedy solution to getting rid of unwanted hair

Creams do not penetrate the surface of the skin in removing hair so this means that the roots of the hair remain and hair regrowth occurs fairly rapidly – within a few days or a weeks or so. You will find that regrowth is slower and softer however than if you shave your unwanted hair – you will not get such a stubbly feel – and you will also find depilatories easier to use than in areas where it is difficult to get a close shave due to the contours of the skin.

Due to the strong alkali chemical used in depilatory hair removal many manufacturers state that you should not use soap or deodorant on the same areas for some hours to avoid skin irritation. You’ll probably find it easiest to use depilatory creams in the evening, rinse off with warm water and then you can take your usual shower in the morning. Having said that there are now some creams and gels designed to be used in the shower.

Always follow the instructions on the packaging carefully in particular about

  • doing a patch test (trying out the cream for a short time on a small area of your skin to check for adverse reactions)
  • where you should and should not us the cream (particularly avoid using nera the eyes or on broken and already irritated skin)
  • the application of the hair cream and the amount of time to leave it on your skin
    removal of the cream

Use any tools which are supplied with the product to apply and remove the cream. You will often find a spatula in the packaging which is the best tool for the job.

Hair removal creams may not work well if the skin is not clean and dry as oils and sweat on the skin and hair may prevent the chemicals in the depilatory reaching and acting on the hair so make sure you use a face cloth and warm water to wash the skin and then dry carefully before applying the depilatory lotion or cream.

The worst of depilatory creams (and the main thing which puts me off them) is the pungent smell. This can’t be avoided completely (although many manufacturers such as Veet and Nair make a valiant attempt to mask it with wonderful sounding fragrances). The reality is that you will still be able to smell the strong alkali chemical mixture during the few minutes you have applied the cream and in your bathroom for a while afterwards.

The best hair removal cream is one which is designed for the area where you want to remove unwanted hair, which reacts favorably with your skin yet is strong enough to get the job done. Also look for one which has a fragrance which appeals more than others (even if it can’t remove the chemcal smell entirely).

These creams are reasonably cheap so it is worth experimenting with Nair and Veet cream and lotion (which are the most well-known and respected brands – add Immac to this in the UK) as well as generic brands sold in drugstore chains. We are all different and have different reactions to products so there is no one best depilatory cream for all.

The best for me might very well be the worst for you – the one that does not remove your hair well or causes a reaction where others don’t. Therefore try out the different formulas of the creams, ways of applying and removing. To get an idea of the vast selection available these days take a look at the many available right now at Amazon – there are good discounts there too.

In addition to the usual brands of depilatory cream you many also find more expensive creams (Surgi cream and Revitol spring to mind) which promise to reduce hair growth. I did not notice any difference when I tried them but your mileage may vary as they say.

Veet for Men Hair Removal

Veet for men is just like Veet hair removal for women except it comes in more masculine packaging and with a more masculine smell. Just as well too because no man wants to buy hair removal cream in a pink tube decorated with flowers and end up smelling of roses in a effort to get a smooth back.

Luckily Veet is being stocked among the men’s products at the drugstore so that helps as well or you can easily buy online.

Veet for Men Products

The products are fairly limited just now but you’ll find everything you need. Actually I’m not sure why there are so many different Veet for women products. It’s like the marketing department have to dream up something new every few months, so that’s what they do without it being strictly necessary. Anyway in the Veet hair removal for men range you can get :-

Veet for men

1. Veet for Men Hair Removal Gel Cream

After the obligatory patch test (don’t forget in case your skin is over-sensitive to the chemicals) you smear Veet hair removal gel cream onto your skin with your hand or the spatula provided, without rubbing in and leave for a few minutes then remove with the spatula (the spatula helps break off the hair) and rinse off the residue (in the shower if you like). Simple! And much better than stubbly regrowth and razor rash.

There are just a few things to remember. You should use this only on your back, chest, legs and shoulders – it’s not for the sensitive bikini area – only the area outside your speedos! Although depilatory products are fine for female facial hair, the male beard is far too tough for using chemicals so don’t try this.

Also do not apply Veet gel cream to every area at once. Try it in one place and see how you get on first before going wild with the cream. And don’t leave it on your skin longer than the time indicated on the packaging. This is not the time to answer the phone! Also it can be quite difficult to apply to your back and shoulders so you should ask for help for these hard to reach places.

The other disadvantage for hairy back removal or even chest removal is how much of the cream you will need if you use it on a regular basis. It is fine for a special occasion or if you have a small patch of hair you want to remove but if you want to stay smooth you will need to use it every few days and the cost will get prohibitive. Even the cost of laser hair removal will seem low if you do a comparison over the years.

2. Veet for Men Ready to Use Wax Strips

Waxing is very effective at removing hair and keeping you smooth for weeks on end but it can be inconvenient and expensive going to the salon regularly. Home waxing kits are cheap and effective but they can be messy and time consuming too. Veet wax strips are ready to use in an instant however and there’s nothing to clean up afterwards.

You take a strip, peel off the backing and smooth it onto your unwanted hair, wait a couple of seconds and then whisk it off in one quick movement against the direction of hair growth and as close to the skin as possible. Don’t yank upwards! The hair comes away with the strip.

Of course, it’s like removing a sticking plaster – a bit painful but any pain quickly disappears and redness goes within an hour or two. You can apply a cold compress after waxing and it also helps to run your hand over your skin immediately after removing each strip.

You do have to wait a little for hair to regrow before the wax has something to grip but the strips are quite effective even on very short hair which has just dared to show its face. The strips do have the same drawback as the cream in that you can’t wax hard to reach places without help. Also Veet advise that they are not used on your chest (although salon waxing IS suitable for chest hair removal).

Veet for Men Reviews

The Veet for Men reviews I have seen are pretty much the same as for hair removal products for women. If it works for you, you love the product. If you skin is sensitive to the product then you hate it. These products are inexpensive so it’s worth having a try and seeing whether they offer a good option for you.
