Excess Hair and the Menopause

One account of a 50 year old woman whose facial hair seemed to sprout almost overnight. The solution for her? Waxing.

I try plucking, but am overwhelmed by the forest that seems to be growing from my chin. I am ashamed. I curse the hormones surging through my body. How long has it been since I’ve had a good chin waxing? I can’t even look at my upper lip! I’m afraid that a handlebar may have grown in middle of the night

Unfortunately unwanted hair does seem to appear along with the menopause for some women due to hormonal fluctuations. If you have a big problem with this see your doctor otherwise the solutions are the same as for everyone else below the age of the menopause – waxing, plucking, electrolysis, laser hair removal. It’s just something new you may have to cope with along with other symptoms of the menopause but definitely something you have plenty of solutions for and there’s no need to get down about it. Take action!

Laser Hair Removal Journal

This link is to the diary of a 25 year old woman who is undergoing laser hair treatment on her upper lip, underarms and bikini line. She has had three sessions of laser hair removal so far and is experiencing some regrowth and issues but is generally happy (at this stage) with her treatment. If only we could look into the future to see if she is still happy in 6 months, a year or 5 years from now with this method of hair removal!

If you have laser hair removal, why not keep a similar diary?

If you have laser hair removal, why not keep a similar diary?

Update 2008 : This woman has now had 9 sessions of laser hair removal and it’s quite fascinating to see and read about her progress. Some areas have seen disappointing results in particular the facial area where a less powerful laser was used. Of course the face cannot stand the same strength of laser as the legs etc. I would have expected better results than this however.

Update 2011 : The progress reports stopped after the 9th treatment which is a pity – it would have ben good to see how this lady did, 3 years later and if she stayed hair free in the areas where she was happy with her laser hair removal treatment.

Laser Hair Removal good for Hairy Back?

The link below is the story of a guy who sprouted a hairy back once he reached 30 and whose wife fondly calls him “Chewbacca” as a result.

He has taken the plunge with laser hair removal to increase his body confidence.

Though this method of hair removal isn’t a fully permanent solution for hairy back removal it will REDUCE hair permanently and can be managed from then on with maintenance sessions.

If your wife calls you Chewbacca, laser back treatment may be a good option

And if you can afford it, it is a good alternative to waxing. You do need very deep pockets though to afford it as the cost of laser back hair removal can be a few thousand dollars or pounds just for the initial treatments, let alone the top up sessions.

If affording it is a stretch then you may be motivated to save for your treatment or to use a credit plan. Doing without a few things can be well worth it if you hate your hairy back. This can make sense if you have tried other solutions and they were far from ideal for you.

If you have a partner who is willing to carry out regular treatments on your back you could also invest in a laser hair removal machine you use at home. These are not as strong as laser equipment found in clinics but the best machines do work over time and give you a smooth back with a lower investment.

Phil, the guy in the story, did not find that waxing helped due to the pain of the treatment and due to itching and stubbly regrowth after a few days. Most people find waxing painful but quite effective though you do have to have about a quarter of an inch of regrowth before another treatment becomes feasible which means looking less than smooth until you have enough hair.

Leg Waxing for Charity Fundraising

It now seems to be a bit of a trend (along with head shaving) for guys to get their legs waxed to raise money for charity. All in a good cause but though the leg waxing may seem like a good idea at the time, not all of them seem to realize how painful it can be for first time leg waxers with thick leg hair (as many guys have).

One group of young rugby players had their legs waxed recently for Comic relief – an annual charity fund raiser in the UK which raises money through fun events. Not sure the rugby players thought it was much fun having girls pulling off a strip of wax at £1 a time though :)

Not sure they will do it again in a hurry.

(Good for the guys to know what we girls suffer in the name of beauty anyway)

“It hurt quite a lot. I’ve never felt pain like that before, that’s the first leg waxing experience I’ve ever had – and the last as well.”

Bikini Waxing Essential to Be Sexy?

This article about a woman fearing her first bikini wax is meant to be entertaining (and it is in a way) but it really throws up how ridiculous the whole world of beauty sometimes is.

Because the writer fears she will not be sexy without undergoing the pain, embarrassment and discomfort of having a Brazilian wax.

Does she think that no one ever had good sex before we ever heard of such a thing as a bikini line waxing?

Do you think the lack of Brazilian waxing put an end to Elizabeth and Mr Darcy, Romeo and Juliet or Adam and Eve or any of those other famous pairs throughout history and literature?

Was true love ever thwarted by the lack of Brazilian waxing?

Was true love ever thwarted by the lack of Brazilian waxing?

If men don’t find her sexy without her undergoing such a painful procedure, then the answer is to find other men – plenty of them around who wouldn’t have a clue what a Brazilian was ….

Update April 2011 : Unfortunately the link to the original first bikini line waxing Dear Aphrodite story on the Argonaut.net has disappeared along with the site at some point but I’m sure you get the drift of my comments. Having said that most men wouldn’t know what a Brazilian waxing was back in 2007, four years later the norms are changing and men especially the younger ones are catching on fast – at least rumor has it – probably to do with all the scantily clad (or not clad at all) beauties around in the media and on the Internet that are everywhere and give men a view of what beauty is in all its airbrushed glory.

I still say that most guys wouldn’t throw you out of bed if you display a few extra tufts of hair so it’s up to you if you want to suffer in the name of beauty. A session with pain-free depilatory cream is enough not to display unwanted hair on the beach. Maybe you should just insist that if he wants to see more bare flesh than that then he should pay the price with a back, sack and crack wax and get your own back :)

DIY Bikini Waxing

If you’re ever tempted to try bikini waxing at home – read this account first.

Unless you have a few wispy hairs to remove far from any sensitive parts probably best to leave well alone. And don’t even think about doing a Brazilian unless you have a huge amount of courage…

Professional waxing is worth it when it comes to bikini waxing but even more so for a process like Brazilian waxing where you are pulling out hair from your more sensitive parts.

DIY bikini waxing

DIY bikini waxing : keep smiling by leaving it to the professionals unless you have some experience

Even if you think you could take a DIY approach always try a professional treatment first so that you can pick up some tips on how to do the process properly and remember, it will hurt less when an experienced practitioner works on you until you have just as much expertise to wax properly. The faster you pull off the wax the better – just like a sticking plaster!

If you can’t afford to go professional with a Brazilian wax, try another method of hair removal down there. See all the other options here: pubic hair removal and bikini line shaping

If you are a novice waxer, but still want to have a go, start by waxing your legs and when you are proficient at that you can extend your expertise more easily.

At least with a DIY process, you get a bit of privacy. There is nowhere to hide with a salon bikini wax although, it has to be said, that the beautician, like a gynecologist will have seen it all before and will not be at all embarrassed so it will put you at your ease.

Bikini Waxing – When DIY Isn’t Worth The Savings

Christopher Hitchens Back, Sack and Crack wax

Not something to read over breakfast but if you really want to make yourself cringe take a look at Christopher Hitchens’ excruciating account of his recent back, sack and crack wax.

Waxing your legs will seem like floating on clouds after reading this.

What is the world coming to when we feel the need to improve ourselves by going through this kind of torture? I don’t think men are so bothered by their looks that this can be worth it especially as the process will have to be suffered over and over again – probably every 4 weeks or so. And then in between there are the agonies of all those potential ingrown hairs in awkward little places waiting to drive you to distraction with incessant itching where you can’t scratch – at least not in public.

I know we girls suffer in the name of beauty but there’s not that much pain involved in most things – even leg waxing once you get used to it. I don’t think men are ever going to get desensitized to this kind of body waxing in their most sensitive places.

And really guys, you don’t need to go through these agonies for us in the name of beauty (or vanity). Get rid of the hairy back, if you like, but as for the rest we love you just the way you are.

Harrison Ford’s Chest Waxing

Movies stars need hair removal too – and suffer all kinds in the name of charity including chest waxing.

Just read today Harrison Ford has had his chest waxed in protest against earth deforestation.

As vice chair of the global environment group Conservation International, presumably he felt that he wanted to draw attention to the painful affects of deforestation by getting his chest painfully deforested.

Apparently the whole waxing event was witnessed by Melanie B of the Spice Girls (How come she got an invitation to the waxing party and where are those pictures, girl?!)

Mind you, in his Indiana Jones movie poster there Mr Ford does not seem to have a thick thatch on his chest anyway.

So maybe removing his body hair was not so painful after all.

Or maybe he had his chest waxed for the Indiana Jones movie too.

Mind you, you would think that movie stars would take the easy way out and get laser hair removal, though perhaps they are hedging their bets in case chest hair becomes an essential accessory for the big stars of the screen again.

Sex and the City Hair Removal Moment

Hair removal is never far from the news, when it comes to following the fashionable and beautiful and it even gets a mention in the movies now and again.

Sex in the City - Hair Removal

Did You See the Hair Removal Moment in Sex in the City

I went to see the new Sex and the City movie last night – my girlfriends couldn’t believe I hadn’t ever seen the TV show!

Anyway it was a great feel-good movie – fantastic for a girlie night out…

One of the funniest scenes (you’ll know it when you see it) is where they spot the tell tale stray hairs and tease Miranda for not having kept up her bikini waxing appointments – hilarious. It’s seen as worse than being naked for these confident ladies to have hair sprouting out down there.

Enjoy it when you see it – and remember to do your bikini line girls :)

Another Use for Depilatory Cream…

You can use depilatory cream just about everywhere on your body, provided that you are not sensitive to the chemicals and use the right hair removal cream in the right place, but I heard a new use for the stuff today which made me think that the world has gone a bit mad.

If you had a dog would you be beautifying it by using mascara and lipstick and removing hair which didn’t conform to the exact idea of dog beauty for your particular breed with Veet or Nair hair removal cream? I didn’t think so but apparently some owners are barking (!) mad enough to do so with the result that the top dog show in the UK has had to put out a warning that depilatory cream may not be used on dogs.

See this article from the Daily Telegraph.

Chinese Crested dog

Chinese Crested dog - one of the hairless breeds but only with help?

It’s the hairless breeds which may have a problem as they may have hair growing in the wrong places just like us.

What gets me is how they stop the dog removing the product before the time is up. I have a hard enough job, getting impatient standing around in the bathroom for what seems like an age (even though it is only a few minutes) while a depilatory lotion gets to work never mind a poor animal.

Now I know we suffer in the name of beauty and we can go to extremes burning off our unwanted hair with chemicals, and pulling it out by the roots with wax, but this is no way to treat our pets even if we don’t mind suffering ourselves in the name of beauty.

The beauty world got going on our men folk not too many years ago with Veet for men. Surely there will never be a Veet for dogs!
